German champion Zverev breaks American dream with win against Shelton in the US Open
The US Open a two-week tennis tournament finished in New York City with the American dream of a Shelton win, dashed as top seeded German, Alexander Zverev wins his second title of the year.
Ben Shelton, born in Atlanta, faced some of the top players in the tournament including Frances Tiafoe in the semifinals, Carlos Alcaraz in the quarter final and Stefanos Tsitsipas in the round of 16. After coming out on top against some of the top seeded players in the tournament, the American hopes began to rise for Ben Shelton that he could win his first ever home ATP trophy and the first American male to win the us open since 2003.
Unfortunately, Shelton’s dream of winning in his home country was broken as Zverev who won inside four sets 6-3, 7-6, 5-7, 6-2.
After the game, Zverev congratulated Shelton for how far he has come in this tournament saying, “If I had to bet all my money on it, I would bet that you would lift this trophy one day.” Further on, Zverev also spoke about thanking his mother who supported him throughout his battle with type 1 diabetes when he was a child and was very unlikely to become an athlete. Once the interviews concluded, both athletes left the court with the crowd clapping off both players after the 3 hours and 33 minutes of hard work
With Zverev’s winning streak continuing for the year, how far can he go for the rest of his career?
